What is Making Tax Digital?

Making Tax Digital (MTD) is a new way of managing your tax. It’s been introduced by HMRC to move the UK tax system online and make it more accurate.

As well as filing one tax return (Self Assessment) at the end of the year, the Government requires you to keep digital records and send updates throughout the year using software.

For many sole traders and landlords, this is the biggest change to tax reporting in a generation.

When does it start?

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is being introduced in stages. If you're a sole trader and/or landlord, there's a strong chance this will apply to you.

  • April 2026

    Income over £50,000
First wave — high earners affected first

  • April 2027

    Income over £30,000
Second wave extends to more earners

  • April 2028

    Income over £20,000
Final wave — most sole traders & landlords affected

Why is it happening?

HMRC is introducing Making Tax Digital to modernise the UK tax system and reduce the tax gap — the difference between what’s owed and what’s actually paid.

In simple terms, it’s about replacing paperwork and guesswork with digital records and clearer visibility.

  • Reduce errors in tax reporting

  • Make it easier to keep track of what you owe

  • Move towards a more real-time tax system

What does this mean for you?

If you currently keep spreadsheets (or worse, receipts in a shoebox), only think about tax once a year, or rely on your accountant to sort everything at the last minute — things will need to change.

You’ll need a system that works all year round — not just in January.

  • Relying on your accountant to sort everything at the last minute
